First referenced in the first-century AD and dispensing holy water, vending machines have a long history. But, it was nearly 2000 years before other exciting possibilities began to emerge for the device. By the 1880s, well into the industrial age, a coin-operated vending machine had already been built in London. In the US, Thomas Adams Gum Company was selling gum on train platforms by 1888. The addictive gaming element was added just before the turn-of-the-century in 1897 by Pulver Manufacturing Company, which gave rise to the "trade-stimulator", then the pinball machine, and eventually, the modern arcade game. Put some work into "Strike It Rich" for a functional vending machine, or use it to accessorize a home. Either way, it's a ironic reminder of just who was "striking it rich" when you pumped in the quarters.
