Boro is a Japanese word meaning “tattered rags.” Like early North American patchwork quilts, boro textiles reveal much about the living standards of Japanese peasant families in the late 19th-20th century. Lovingly patched and sewn using reused and recycled indigo-dyed cotton rags, each unique piece weaves together a rich, multi-generational story filled with heart and soul.
This piece truly blends all the colors, textures and details encompassed in our collection.
It is so simple. Much like Rothko’s paintings, we wanted to recreate that color block with different textures and lines. With each distinct scarf, we incorporate a bundle of priceless boro, interwoven with other fabric scraps we have collected over the years for projects like this one.
What used to be associated with poverty is now viewed as a work of art. Not only can the boro scarf be worn multiple ways, it looks great thrown on the bed or hung on the wall.
* Special thanks to our friend Eric in Boise, Idaho, for depleting his stash then digging high and low around the globe to get us all of the beautiful boro.
